Best Bets for Cold Weather: Warm Clothes and Hot Gifts!

Sue Melville

Tis’ the season and I‘ve got the over/under to keep you warm while you’re out and about. These are the best bets for fall/winter fashion! Whether you’re doing errands or headed to parties this guide to sweaters and outerwear will get you there and looking your best.

Once you’re all dressed and ready to go, I’ve put together a few of my favorite things for you to bring along. My gift suggestions will make it easy for you shop early for hosts, family, and friends. Much of it is locally sourced to bypass the current “supply chain” woes and support independent businesses.

The over and under on fall and winter styles .

Sweater weather: Cozy begins under your coat.
Sweaters are really having a moment this fall. We are seeing iconic 90s-inspired styles return to join modern looks that go from office to night out chic easily. There’s a style and fit for every woman and every wardrobe.

As a personal image consultant, I can drill down on your needs in a consultation (in person or via zoom) but in the meantime here’s the breakdown on two of  popular picks for you to explore. Give yourself an instant and practical style upgrade with one (or both) of these choices, as they work well for most any body type and lifestyle.

Ribbed Sweaters
Slinky ribbed styles have come back from the mid-90s. These simple but elegant knits look most chic paired with straight leg jeans in a medium wash or tossed on with a silky slip skirt.

We found rib kits almost everywhere but took a particular shine to this classic ribbed knit hoodie at Nordstrom. It’s a neutral color so you’ll be able to enjoy it for many seasons together with whatever color trends are out there at the time.

Color blocked Sweaters
On the opposite end of retro is the unexpected and eye-catching color blocked sweater trend. It’s a lively look we found in many combos. It is revitalizing two familiar silhouettes we already know and love; the cardigan and turtleneck.

The subtle shades of  the mock turtleneck brings this wardrobe workhorse right to the cutting edge. The neckline works for most and makes a perfect concealer for a less than flawless neck. It can be worn alone or do double duty when layered under blazers and this year’s popular ponchos (more on those later!)

Cardigans, on the other hand add the color blocks to the top layer and work with T-shirts, camisoles and everything in between for a variety of finished looks. The striking contrasts of the oversized color block Veronica Beard Cardigan shown above in the collage will lift any pairing and go with everything else in your wardrobe from jeans to leather pants.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention one item guaranteed to complement your new sweaters and coats.  The simple lines of Sara Campbell’s Sheri Pants  (above, in camel) are timeless and elevate most pieces you already own. The wide variety of colors from khaki to sorbet to mint add pop or neutrality as needed. These pants are a great investment that will add mileage to your new purchases and existing wardrobe. They’d also be appreciated as a gift by anyone, regardless of their fashion savvy.

Get over it! Don’t neglect your top layer look.
Not only are they essential for warmth and, well, survival, but coats are also a super-stylish addition to a fall or winter outfit.  And, on many days, they are the outfit. They are often all anyone sees of us while out shopping or at an outdoor event. Yet somehow many of us can go years without an upgrade to our outerwear.

After all the practical boxes are checked, a fab coat is an opportunity to flatter your figure while showcasing your personal style. We have far too many favorites to narrow down for you here, so instead let us offer this primer of trends you may not be sure about , so you don’t get overwhelmed by the choices on the racks.

Whether you’re currently shopping or just browsing, knowing your options will help you narrow down how adventurous you want to be before you even begin.

 The Faux Fur
Less hairy and more shearling-ish than previous seasons, the faux fur coat or jacket can be found in every length and ever color, from classic neutrals to bold hues, and even some patterns. My favorite  this year, shown above, combines this trend with a classic style and color to make it timeless.

Pros: These cozy coats really make a statement, regardless of the color, and can be an instant update to a classic wardrobe.
Cons: A boxy fur coat can be overwhelming, so look for details, like belts, or shorter lengths, to make this style more flattering, particularly if you’re petite.

Pretty Puffers
Everyone’s favorite comforter-turned-coat is bolder than ever this season in chic shades, wrap styling and a new oversized fit.

Pros: Cozy yet trendy
Cons: The Michelin Man effect can be hard to pull off, especially for petites

Ponchos & Capes
You don’t have to be a superhero to pull off a cape this season. Ponchos and capes are back in a big way, and they add interest to everyday outfits and basics to bring versatility to your wardrobe, particularly in fall.

Pros: A dramatic flair to outfits, as well as texture and often pattern
Cons: Huge wraps can dwarf petite frames, and the wrong length or details can add bulk in unwanted areas

Chic Shearling
Shearling has that effortless elegance that everyone loves, but this season, it’s as popular as a trim as it is in full coats, and the effect is chic and unexpected.

Pros: Luxe, with a boho flair
Cons: Expensive, and can wear out over time

Spread joy with winning gifts and finishing touches.
The color blocked look goes from sweaters and extends into home décor. This offers an opportunity for you to give fashionable host gifts even if you don’t know their size. Chatham Pottery’s line of duotone and floral mugs, dinnerware and gift items add a modern edge to even the most utilitarian pieces.  Treat yourself or a friend to these American made pieces, made in and shipped to you direct from Massachusetts.

Gift ollage

Spread the joy this season with these thoughtful gifts.

Every outfit can benefit from a wisely chosen piece of jewelry, yet like outerwear we often don’t update these pieces as often as we do the rest of the items in our closets. You can’t go wrong giving the gift of subtle elegance to yourself or a loved one from the American made Ed Levin collection.  The Signature Twist Bracelet, Captivating Earrings and Zenith Pendant. I chose to show here are just an example of the many practical yet extravagant you and your loved ones deserve.

Finally, a remembrance for those who cannot be with us this year. Beautiful handblown Bristol glass hurricane lamps  are a thoughtful gesture to acknowledge the loss and offer comfort. These are made in Vermont by Simon Pearce.

I hope this post takes some of the the stress out of getting ready and gift giving this season.
