We’ve all spent more time at home embracing the cozy. From what we ate to what we wore, comfort was key for many of us this past year. But spring is officially here, and with that comes a time for renewal; for bursting out of our winter cocoons…perhaps more than ever before!

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I talked about the Pantone colors of the year – a vibrant light yellow named Illuminating and the complementary Ultimate Gray, something the Pantone Color Institute describes as, “the first neutral shade ever to be selected.”

I think we can agree there’s nothing neutral about yellow, and most have a hard time envisioning it in their wardrobes. What I do love about it is that it represents hope and instills a feeling of cheerfulness and energy. And gray can moderate brighter hues and really pull a color scheme together.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said it best: “It’s a combination that speaks to the resilience, the optimism and hope and positivity that we need, as we reset, renew, reimagine and reinvent.”

With the new season I think there are some fun ways to work with these colors for your spring fashion updates. Here are three tips to help you on your way:

Start Small: Accessorize!

When I work with clients, I often use accessories like belts and scarves to pull in color. Even statement jewelry can make a big impact with little commitment. And a great yellow bag can be a fantastic accessory and can give you the energizing jolt you’re looking for! Deeper, richer yellows can work well here, especially when playing against a neutral. It gives a boost and adds a dose of color to your neutral wardrobe staples. And it’s good to remember that while dark colors can be flattering, color adds brightness to our outfits that need some life.

Rethink the LBD

And speaking of dark colors, the Little Black Dress is a perennial favorite for many women. But here’s where gray can be our new bestie! It is a great neutral that lives between the extremes of white and black. The expression “shades of gray” comes to mind; there are blueish grays, greenish grays, earthier grays – all different tones that can read differently and work with other pieces you may already have. Refined and understated it can moderate brighter hues and really pull a color scheme together.

Assess, Don’t Overhaul!

“I have nothing to wear” is probably one of the things I hear most from the women I work with. But adding any new things to your wardrobe can be a fine-tune and not a daunting overhaul. Introducing these spring colors can be as simply as looking at what you already have in your closet, learning to see these items in new ways, and finding the pieces you own that will provide the perfect canvas for these spring palette updates.
